Ecstatic Dance Berlin — barefoot sex-positive conscious dance with Kink-Y

Ecstatic Dance Berlin

Move. Feel. Connect. — Berlin's sex-positive take on barefoot conscious dance

What Happens at a Kink-Y Ecstatic Dance

Ecstatic dance is not a style of dancing. It is a set of conditions that make free movement easy in a room full of strangers. No steps to learn. No teacher at the front. No talking on the floor, and no one watching to see how you are doing.

Our Berlin edition runs from 18:00 to midnight and moves in stages. A cup of ceremonial cacao while people arrive and shoes come off at the door. An opening circle where the agreements are said out loud. Fifteen minutes of gentle connection exercises. Then two and a half hours of barefoot, wordless, free-form dancing, closed by a short sound healing. After that the whole space opens into a free flow with sauna for anyone who wants to stay.

The room matters as much as the programme. It is warm and soft — a lot of wood, low light, unusual furniture and small details tucked around the space. It is the kind of room that makes sensual and spiritual connection feel natural rather than staged. There is a piano, and some evenings we play it to close the dance.

A single ticket is €33 and a couple ticket is €66. The dress code is light and sensual, and current editions stop at 45 people. The exact venue and the booking live on each edition's own event page, linked from the card at the top of this one.

The invitation says the important part in one line: everything is optional, consent is essential.

How the Evening Runs

The published programme runs like this, in Berlin time. It is built as an arc rather than a playlist — the room is warmed slowly, held at a peak, then brought down deliberately instead of just stopping.

  1. 18:00–18:30 · Arrival & Cacao

Doors open, shoes come off, and you are handed a cup of ceremonial cacao. Take the full half hour. Landing slowly is part of the practice, not the queue before it.

  2. 18:30–18:45 · Opening Circle

The whole room stands together. A short welcome and the agreements spoken out loud, so nobody has to guess what the floor expects. It is also the last talking of the night.

  3. 18:45–19:00 · Connection Activities

Gentle guided exercises to meet the people you are about to share a floor with — eye contact, breath, simple partnered movement. Joining in is invited, never required; watching from the edge is a normal choice.

  4. 19:00–21:30 · Ecstatic Dance

Two and a half hours of free-form movement through one long musical wave. No talking, no choreography, no steps to learn. Dance alone, dance with others, or sit at the side when you need to.

  5. 21:30–21:45 · Sound Healing

The room comes down to the floor and the music turns to resonance rather than rhythm. Fifteen minutes to let a very physical two and a half hours settle before anything else happens.

  6. 22:00–00:00 · Free Flow, Sauna & Connection

The container opens: sauna, water, conversation and, for those who want it, closeness. Some people stay until midnight, some go home after the sound healing. Both are ordinary.

How the Kink-Y Edition Differs From a Classic Ecstatic Dance

Most ecstatic dances in the world are not sexual, and that is worth stating plainly. If you have danced at a classic ecstatic dance in Amsterdam, Ubud or anywhere else, sensual contact is not part of that container and should never be assumed there.

Ours is different by design, and it says so on the invitation. Kink-Y Ecstatic Dance is a sex-positive evening. The dance itself keeps the traditional shape — barefoot, wordless, no performance, no right way to move, no judgement — and departs from the standard format in three deliberate ways.

First, ceremonial cacao opens the night instead of a straight warm-up. Second, a sound healing closes the dance rather than a fade-out, so two and a half hours of physical work has somewhere soft to land. Third, when the dance ends the whole space opens into a free flow with sauna, where connection and intimacy are possible for people who want to continue.

That last part is an option, not the point of the evening, and it is not where most of the hours go. Plenty of guests use the sauna, talk and go home. Consent is the only part of the night that is not optional.

New to this? Read our consent policy and our event guidelines first. They are short, they are what everyone in the room has already agreed to, and they are the quickest way to arrive knowing how the night works.

The Agreements the Dance Floor Runs On

Ecstatic Dance carries a short list of shared agreements wherever it is held — three lines in the original Hawaiian formulation, usually expanded locally. They are not rules for their own sake: each one removes a specific reason to be self-conscious. Kink-Y's invitation names most of them almost word for word, and puts consent alongside them.

We Dance Barefoot

Shoes stay at the door. Bare feet or socks change how you stand, how you balance and how much of the floor you actually feel. Dance shoes or supportive footwear are welcome if you need them for a medical or mobility reason.

We Dance Without Words

Conversation belongs before the circle, in the chill-out areas, and afterwards — not in the middle of the dance. Words pull a room back into its head. From 19:00 the language of the floor is bodies.

No Performance, No Judgement

No choreography, no teacher at the front, no right way to move. Walking, shaking, stillness and lying on the floor all count as dancing. Nobody is marking you — including the person who looks like they know exactly what they are doing.

We Dance As We Are

The venue does not serve or allow alcohol, and this evening is substance-free. That is the tradition and it is also the point: the state everyone is after arrives through movement, breath and music. Sober is how this practice works best, and how the whole room stays on the same wavelength.

No Phones, No Cameras

The shared agreement is screens away, no photo, no video — that is what lets people move badly, cry, laugh or lie down without calculating how it looks. At a sex-positive event it matters twice over: assume the camera stays in the bag, and never point one at anyone.

Consent, Every Time

Dancing with someone is an invitation, not an entitlement. You offer, you read the answer, and you take a no without needing a reason. A yes to a dance is not a yes to touch, and a yes earlier in the night is not a yes later.

Where Ecstatic Dance Came From

Two lineages sit behind almost every ecstatic dance in the world, and they get confused with each other constantly.

The first is the 5Rhythms, formalised in the late 1970s by Gabrielle Roth, an American dancer who developed the work while teaching movement in therapeutic workshops at the Esalen Institute in California. She mapped a wave in five parts — Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness — on a premise that was quietly radical: the body already knows how to move, and most of us were taught out of it.

The second is Ecstatic Dance with capital letters, which is younger and separate. It took shape in 2000 at the Kalani retreat centre on the Big Island of Hawaii, when Max Fathom took over an existing mixtape-driven conscious dance and rebuilt it around DJ-mixed electronic music. It kept the meditative agreements and added the freedom of a dance floor.

Its founders pointedly refused to trademark, franchise or certify any of it — they describe the format as open source — which is a large part of why it spread so fast. Amsterdam picked it up in 2012 and became the European hub, and today there is an Ecstatic Dance in most large cities, Berlin included, run by many separate collectives with no central authority over any of them.

What Kink-Y hosts is our own version of a much older idea, with our own additions. We would rather say that plainly than pretend we invented it.

Who Comes, and Why the Room Stays Small

Current editions are capped at 45 guests, and that number is chosen rather than inherited from a fire code. Forty-five is small enough that you can feel where everyone in the room is, and large enough that you are never the only person dancing.

The mix is genuinely mixed. Some guests come from Berlin's conscious dance world and have never been to a sex-positive event. Others come from Kink-Y's parties and have never danced barefoot in a circle at six in the evening. A lot of people arrive on their own, which is completely normal here. A single ticket is €33. The €66 couple ticket is there for people who want to come together, not the expected way in.

The dress code is light and sensual, which in practice means anything you can move and sweat in for two and a half hours and still feel good wearing. Bring water and a layer for the walk home.

Dates do not follow a fixed monthly rhythm; editions land every few weeks and each one is announced on the events page and in the Kink-Y Telegram community. If Kink-Y is entirely new to you, our Berlin munch is the low-stakes way to meet people over a drink first. Nothing about the dance requires it — plenty of people simply do it in that order.

Coming for the First Time

First ecstatic dance, first sex-positive event, or both on the same night — the nerves are standard and the room is used to them. Six things that make the first one easier.

Use the Cacao Window

18:00 to 18:30 exists so that you can land. Arrive inside it and you step onto the floor already settled — it is the single thing that makes a first edition feel easy.

Eat Light, Drink Water

Two and a half hours of continuous movement is real physical work. Eat something light beforehand and keep drinking water through the evening — your body will thank you around hour two.

The Cacao Is Optional Too

Ceremonial cacao is thick, barely sweetened and mildly stimulating, and the ritual around it is a modern practice inspired by much older Mesoamerican ones. If you take MAO inhibitors or have a heart condition, ask before you drink — or just skip the cup. Nobody is counting.

Start by Doing Nothing

Standing at the edge with your eyes shut for two tracks is a completely legitimate way to begin. Movement usually arrives on its own; hunting for it rarely works.

Practise the No

You will be offered dances you do not want. A shake of the head, or a hand on your own chest, is a complete answer and needs no sentence after it. It gets used constantly and nobody takes it personally.

Leave at Any Stage

The evening is built in stages precisely so that you can step off at one of them. Going home after the sound healing is not leaving early — the free flow is a separate, optional part of the night.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ecstatic dance?

A barefoot, free-form dance practice with no steps, no teacher and no talking on the floor — just one long musical wave to move through. It grew out of Gabrielle Roth's 5Rhythms in the late 1970s and out of the Ecstatic Dance format that started on the Big Island of Hawaii in 2000, and it now runs in most major cities. Kink-Y's Berlin edition follows that shape and adds ceremonial cacao at the start, a sound healing at the end, and an optional sex-positive free flow with sauna afterwards.

What time does Kink-Y's Ecstatic Dance start and finish?

Doors and cacao from 18:00 to 18:30, opening circle 18:30, connection activities 18:45, the dance itself 19:00 to 21:30, sound healing 21:30 to 21:45, then free flow with sauna from 22:00 until midnight. Arriving inside the cacao window matters more than it sounds — it is how the room settles before the floor opens.

Do I need dance experience? Is it beginner friendly?

No experience at all, and no sense of rhythm required. There is no choreography and no right way to move — walking, swaying, shaking and lying still all count. Most editions have several people at their first ever ecstatic dance, and the no-performance and no-judgement agreements exist precisely so that nobody is being watched or assessed.

What should I wear, and do I have to dance barefoot?

The dress code is light and sensual: anything you can move and sweat in for two and a half hours. Shoes come off at the door — socks are fine, and dance shoes or supportive footwear are welcome if you need them for a medical or mobility reason. Bring water and a layer for the walk home.

Is the sex-positive part optional?

Yes, entirely. The invitation says it in one line: everything is optional, consent is essential. The dance is a movement practice, and nothing sexual is expected of anyone at any point. After the sound healing the space opens into a free flow with sauna where intimacy is possible for those who want it — plenty of guests use the sauna, talk and go home instead. Anything that happens has to be asked for, and a no needs no explanation.

Can I come alone, what does it cost, and how do I book?

Coming alone is completely normal and a large share of guests do exactly that. A single ticket is €33 and a couple ticket is €66, and current editions are capped at 45 people, so dates fill. All Kink-Y events are strictly adults only. You can book from the event page here on kink-y.de. Most people use our app instead: it makes booking quicker, shows the guest list filling up in real time, and lets you connect with the people you met once the night is over. It lives at meetonnixie.app.
